春！？
昨日の日中は気温が４５度（摂氏７度）まで上がった。雪解け水が音をたてて流れ、いかにも春の風情。今週は、最高気温が５度以上になる日が続くらしい（最低気温は氷点下）。もちろんこの後また寒くなるだろうが、氷点下１０度、２０度なんて日がずーっと続いていたので、ようやくほっと一息つける。
いつもみんと一緒に登校するお友達のメグは、今朝はなんと、上着なしで現われた。「スウェット着てれば、そんなに寒くないよ」と。みんも早速真似して、スウェットだけの上着なしで出かけていった。いくら寒くないと言ったって、この時間（朝７時）はまだ氷点下なのに…
寒さが厳しければ厳しいほど、春を待ち望む気持ちが強くなる。ほんの少しの春の兆しに心が踊る。実際の春が訪れるまでは何度か期待が裏切られ、失望感も味わうことになるけれど、シカゴの天候は私たちに「待つ」ことの喜びを教えてくれる気がする。（まぁ、シカゴの春は短くて、あっという間にすぐに夏になってしまうのだけれどね。）
そういえば、日曜日の礼拝で、パスターがこんなのを分かち合ってくれた。Jeff Foxworthyというコメディアンが言った言葉なんだそうだ。

客観的にはうんざりするような状況でも、同じ経験を分かち合い、一緒に泣いたり笑ったりできる仲間がいれば、それもまた楽し、ということかな。（笑） シカゴを好きだという人は私のまわりに多い。シカゴは一応、全米屈指の大都会だけど、大都会にありがちな人間の冷たさをあまり感じないんだな。それは、この厳しい気候を共に生き抜いている！という意識がもたらす連帯感のおかげなのかもね。（大袈裟？）
